This week students were introduced to the following fables:
The Tortoise and the Hare The Wind and the Sun The Lion and the Mouse The Bear and the Turtle Sylvester and the Magic Pebble Students discussed what makes a story a fable and what makes a good moral. Students performed some of these fables as plays and did sequencing activities, placing events in the correct order. They noted that the moral, or lesson, always comes at the end. Students considered their favorite morals from the week: Slow and stead wins the race Be careful what you wish for Kindness is better than force Friendship comes in all shapes and sizes Be thankful for what you have Here are next week's spelling words: This week student's wrote "If...then" cause and effect sentences. First, they viewed pictures that showed environmental problems. Then, they wrote a sentence to express the need for change, for example, " If you cut down trees, then there will be no oxygen." Next, they wrote a persuasive letter to a friend or family member. They shared the problem and offered some ideas for solutions.
Students should now understand author's purpose very well: to persuade, inform or entertain. Next week's spelling words for beginners/intermediates are: This week we took some time to celebrate ancient civilizations. The students dressed up and we discussed their favorite ancient civilizations. We are beginning to recognize author's purpose as: persuade, inform and entertain (PIE). We are delving into persuade by having some lively debate on environmental issues.
Next week's spelling list will be: This week students read their books to their homeroom classes. They did an amazing job!!! They were so brave when sharing, using clear, loud, confident voices. Their classmates were very impressed.
We have also been playing games involving: antonyms, synonyms, prefix and suffix words. We have been differentiating books between type (fiction, non-fiction) and purpose (inform, entertain). This is next week's spelling word list: Students have completed the writing process for their narratives and will soon have books made. After completing their books, students worked on prefixes, suffixes, non-fictional reading with inferring questions and writing out ordinal numbers.

Spelling words for next week: Welcome back from Spring Break!
Students are now all finished with typing the final draft of their stories. All are illustrating their books. The books will soon be ready for publishing. Students are also reading books that have themes of taking place long ago in ancient China, Rome and even the wild west! Please find next week's spelling list below: Student's have all started typing their stories on class computers. A couple of students have finished their final drafts! Next step: illustrating their stories and creating a real book!
The students are excellent writers! Their hard work is paying off! Have a wonderful Spring Break!!! The spelling lists for the week after Spring Break are: This week students wrote their first draft of their stories and edited with a teacher. Now, all students have begun writing their second draft in order to add, remove, change and fix their first draft. The students are really becoming fantastic writers!
