Some students found an experiment using soda and mentos lollies. We went out into the field to try it out. We made a hypothesis as the students knew an explosion would occur, but would the coke explode more of the sprite? A hypothesis in science is like a prediction we make in reading. It is a thinking guess or estimate based on information we have or prior knowledge. No one thought it would explode to the same degree. All the students thought the coke would explode more - reason? Coke has more sugar and will react more.
We then talked about the need to carry out a test or do some research. So which would explode more? To do a test in science we have to carry out a 'fair test' - where only one thing changes. In this case the number of mentos we put in has to be the same, the size of drink bottle and amount of drink was the same. The one change was the type of drink - coke or sprite.
We found our hypothesis was then tested and found to be correct. The coke did explode higher than the sprite.
