Dear Parents,
How time flies! This is our last week before the winter holidays. We will spend the week revising/continuing what we started last week and winding down our inquiry and discussions before we break for the holidays. As and when opportunities present themselves, please help your child practice using the clock and the calendar to tell time and dates. For example: 1. We will be back from our holidays on the 1st of January. What will the date be? 2. If we get to the airport at 2.30 p.m. and our flight takes off 2 hours later, what time will it be? 3. I can tell that the time is 11:15 in the morning right now. Do you know if it's a.m. or p.m.? What's another way I can say 11:15? (Quarter past eleven) 4. It's the 16th today. Grandma will be visiting us in 9 days. On what date will she arrive? 5. Your birthday is in August. Which month of the year is that? (8th) While you are away on holidays, if you and your child come across interesting signs and symbols to share that may generate good discussions in the class, please take some photos! Announcements/Reminders:
Have a lovely break and see you in the new year! Warm regards, Bhavna Dear Parents,
This week we delve further into our new unit. We continue to build our understanding of signs, symbols and icons and the universitality of these. We will look at what makes signs and symbols effective - colour, simple images, etc. and what makes some difficult to 'read'. Next week we will also look into some specialized forms of signs and symbols used for communication like sign language and braille. In language, we will be looking at examples of instructions that are written and we will start to create our own. We will begin by looking at imperative verbs (the bossy verbs). We know verbs are 'action/doing' words - we have talked and worked with these often. The imperative verbs are commands which are used when explaing through instructions and procedures. We will also introduce contractions and how to contract two words correctly as students are experimenting with them when writing stories and narratives. Similar to last week, spelling words for the week will be a review of a few different spelling features from previous spelling quizzes. In math we are learning to tell the time and to read calendars. We will look at using calendars, digital and analoge clocks - to the hour, half hour and 1/4 past and to. Some students are ready to look at time at the 5 minute intervals. We continue to look at time and calendar next week as well. Reminders/Announcements:
As always, thank you for your continued support. Warm regards, Bhavna |
